It starts out small where a player bumps into you, then they kick your legs going for the ball. Next, they give you a little shove because they aren’t as fast as you. With every poor show of sportsmanship, you are tempted to match energy and retaliate by doing to them what they do to you. That’s when the whistle is finally blown but not of the person who started it, but the person who retaliated. It happens all too often. Growing up, when I complained about people fouling me, I was often the player that would foul back. It wasn’t until I had a coach that told me to outplay them rather than out foul them that changed my perspective. The best way to get back at them wasn’t to get a card, it was to get a goal. Yes, let the refs and coaches know fouls are happening, but play the game better than them. The more our team scored the more frustrated they became and that was far better than matching foul for foul.

This reality reminds me of the verse in Romans where we are called to overcome evil with good. The world we live in is full of evil people doing evil things. And if we are not careful, we tend to follow the examples of those around us. Before long we are doing the very things we were made at others for doing. When we match energies and hurt people because they hurt us; it doesn’t fix the problem. The world doesn’t need more people doing bad things because everyone else is. The world needs people who do good despite the bad things that happen in life. When we seek to help people, to pray for people, to put the needs of other people first, we can change the reality of the world we live in. Jesus set this example in the way He loved others. He looked out for their needs, he healed people, fed the hungry, and cared for those who were in need; he even forgave the very people who planned to kill him. This is how we overcome evil. Not by doing back, but by doing good to others even if they don’t do the same to us.

As always, if you have any question about your faith or how to have a relationship with Jesus, I would love to talk with you about it! -Coach Nick

“Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.”-Romans 12:21 ESV The game of soccer can be a very physical game and often can quickly get out of hand if the refs don’t maintain control of the game.
